Single-Slit Diffraction

λ = 500 nm
a = 0.10 mm
L = 1.00 m
y₁ = λL/a = 5.00 mm
central bright band 2y₁ = 10.0 mm
θ₁ = asin(λ/a) = 0.286°

Single-slit diffraction

Concept: Light passing through a slit only a fraction of a millimetre wide does not make a thin stripe on the screen. It spreads out into a bright central band with dark fringes either side. The narrower the slit, the wider the pattern.
